The Newmarket Branch of the Islamic Society of York Region is a religious, non-profit, charitable organization established in 2005 with the intention of serving the Muslims and Non-Muslims of Newmarket-Aurora. Our mission is to:

  • Establish congregational prayers for Muslims in the community
  • Provide Islamic educational programs for adults and children
  • Bring together the Muslim community for a variety of religious, social, and cultural events
  • Work with the extended community to promote Islamic core values of peace, tolerance, mutual respect, and understanding
  • Spread the message of Islam, according to our Holy book, the Quraan, and the examples set by the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessing be upon him).

The Newmarket-Aurora Muslim community is composed of approximately 200 Canadian families with cultural backgrounds from all over the world.

The Newmarket branch of the Islamic Society of York Region would like to extend its thanks, first and foremost, to the town of Newmarket for welcoming us and treating us as every Canadian aught to be treated, secondly, to our parent organization, the Islamic Society of York Region, for its continued support, and finally, to the local community for standing by this humble cause, and struggling with us every step of the way.

We want to thank you for visiting us, and encourage you to be a part of our humble cause. Please visit our Donations page to learn more about how you can contribute.

Our journey began In 1989, Aurora, Ontario, with the opening of a Musalla in the basement of a local Muslim business, Omar shoes. The Musalla was first used for Friday prayers (Salaat-ul-Jumu’ah). In 1994 Br. Omar Khamissa (may Allah have mercy on him), a resident of Aurora for more than 36 years, extended the Musallah in the basement with the help of some young brothers. The 1200 ft2 space helped to expanded services to our community to include classes and activities for children and Taraweh prayers during the month of Ramadan.

On the 21st of April 2005, after 15 years of hard work and determination, with the Grace and Mercy of Allah, the community purchased a piece of land in the beautiful town of Newmarket, Ontario. This day marked a new phase in the growth for the Newmarket-Aurora Muslim community.

By the Grace and Mercy of Allah, our place of worship is now partially operational, holding the five prescribed daily prayers, the Friday prayers, the two Eid prayers, the Taraweh prayers, weekend classes for children, and religious study circles (halaqa).
